Kai Havertz has been ruled out of Chelsea’s FA Cup final against Liverpool due to a hamstring injury.
The 22-year-old was an unlikely omission from Chelsea’s teamsheet when the two sides were announced for the Wembley showdown.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel later confirmed Havertz was missing after picking up a knock.
Tuchel told reporters ahead of the game: “We tried until the last minute.
“He (Havertz) has hamstring problems. Not a real injury. He feels if he goes, there will be an injury. If he says this in front of a final it is serious enough to not start.”
Havertz has made 45 appearances across all competitions in his second season at the club, scoring 13 goals and claiming six assists.
Romelu Lukaku will start alongside Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount in Havertz’s absence, while Timo Werner was named on the substitutes’ bench.
There was some good news for Tuchel, however, as Mateo Kovacic shook off an ankle injury to start for Chelsea.
Tuchel said in his pre-match press conference that Kovacic would need a “miracle” to feature after the midfielder was on the wrong end of a late lunge by Daniel James during Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Leeds United.
